City dwellers face power cuts

Dhaka: Although official figure showed no shortage in supply of electricity across the country, many areas in the city experienced power cuts on Sunday due to increased demand.
The PDB and PGCB official data shows that there was no shortage in power supply across the country as the total generation was 7641 MW at 3 pm, 7655 MW at 4 pm, 7710 MW at 5pm, 7611 MW at 6pm and 8262 MW at 7 pm on Sunday against the same demand in the respective time.
The two organisations -- PDB responsible for power generation and PGCB responsible for power transmission and system control -- showed zero load-shedding in all the areas.
But officials of DPDC and Desco, the two entities responsible for power distribution in Dhaka city, said they had to resort to forced load-shedding in different areas throughout the day due to shortage in supply.
Director (Operations) of the Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) Harun-or-Rashid admitted to the power disruption in various areas under his organisation's jurisdiction.
But he said there was no load-shedding in DPDC areas after evening. "In the daytime, there was some power disruption in some areas. But now no problem," he told UNB at 8pm.
DPDC runs the power distribution system mainly in the central and south-western part of Dhaka city while Desco controls the power distribution system in north-western and eastern part Dhaka.
An official at the Gulshan control room of Desco informed that they had to go for "forced" load-shedding in different areas because of increased load. "We faced problems of increased load at our Bashundhara sub-station and had to resort to load-shedding in different areas, including Gulshan, Baridhara, Niketan and Badda," said an official of the Desco Gulshan office.
Officials said the heat wave has put an extra pressure on the power distribution system to supply more electricity. But capacity of some sub-stations could not carry the extra load which ultimately forces load-shedding.
