Rangamati: A child, who suffered injuries being hurled about by the landslide at Muslimpara in the district town on Tuesday, breathed his last on Saturday after fighting his injuries for five days, raising the death toll to 158 in five southeastern districts.

Jisan, 3, son of Bajlur Rahman, died on the way to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) from Sadar Hospital in the afternoon as his condition was deteriorated, sources at Sadar Police Station.

Earlier, the bodies of a woman and a man were recovered from the rubble and mud at Dumdumia in Jurachhari upazila of the district in the morning, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rashed Iqbal Chowdhury.

The identities of the two deceased could not be known yet.

Bangladesh Army and Fire Service earlier on Friday evening had officially declared the end of the rescue operation in the district, the UNO said. But they remain ready to act on any information from locals to carry out specific rescue or recovery efforts.

Meanwhile the engineering corps of Bangladesh Army have been working to restore the vehicular movements on Rangamati-Chittagong road, Rangamati-Khagrachhari road, Rangamati-Baraichhari road and Rangamati-Kaptai road as those remained shut since Tuesday due to the disastrous landslides triggered by incessant rains.

Till now, more than 2,000 people have been evacuated from the risky hilly slopes and taken to shelter centres in the district.

With this, a total of 114 people, including five army men, were killed in Rangamati, which was hit hardest by the hillslides, while 34 in Chittagong, six in Bandarban, two each in Cox's Bazar and Khagrachhari.

Meanwhile, the rescue operations in Bandarban, Khagrachhari and Chittagong ended three days back.

Road communication on Rangamati-Chittagong, disrupted following the massive hillslides in Rangamati and nearby districts, will be restored within three days for plying small vehicles.

The road will be opened for the long routed buses and heavy vehicles within a month, said major general Siddiqur Rahman, chief of engineering core of Bangladesh Army while talking to reporters at Rangamati circuit house.

He said nearly 145 points on the Chittagong-Rangamati Highway were damaged due to the landslides, expecting that the reconstruction work will be completed soon if the rains stay away.

GOC of 24th Infantry Division of Bangladesh Army and Area Commander of Chittagong Major General Jahangir Kabir Talukudar and Rangamati regional commander Brig Gen Golam Faruk, among others, were present at that time.

Major General Jahangir Kabir Talukdar said they have taken an initiative to transport goods, including drinking water and fuel, through waterways.
