Rangamati-Chittagong road reopens to light vehicles
Rangamati: The Rangamati-Chittagong road was reopened to light vehicles on Wednesday, nearly eight days after it became unfit for vehicular movement due to the landslides.
GOC of 24 Infantry Division and Area Commander of Chittagong Area of Bangladesh Army Major General Md Jahangir Kabir Talukder opened the road in the afternoon.
However, the road will be opened to all kinds of vehicles after it is fully repaired, said Road Transport and Highways Division Secretary MAN Siddique.
He said Army and the division will prepare the road for heavy vehicles within the next one month.
According to the information of Rangamati district control room, some 118 people, including women and children, were killed and two went missing in the deadly landslides triggered by incessant rainfall last week.
Following the incident, nearly 145 points on the Chittagong-Rangamati Highway were damaged, halting the road communication between the two districts, said Army sources.
