Dhaka: People from all walks of life paid their last tributes to valiant freedom fighter Shahidul Haque Mama, who died in a Qatar hospital on July 1, at the Central Shaheed Minar on Tuesday.

The chief of 'Mama Group Guerrilla Bahini' during the Liberation War died after a two-month battle for life following a massive cardiac arrest. He was 67.

His body arrived in Dhaka from Qatar around 6:15 am today.

Shahidul was given a 'Guard of Honour' on the Shaheed Minar premises around 10:15 am.

Sammilita Sangskritik Jote organised the tribute ceremony where Road Transport and Bridges Minister and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Huq, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and Vice-chancellor of Dhaka University Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique were, among others, present.

Later, the body was taken to Dhaka University central mosque where his 1st namaz-e-janaza was held after Johr prayers.

He was laid to rest at Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard in the afternoon after his 2nd janaza at his previous residence at Mirpur Kazipara.

He left Dhaka for Doha en route to his present home in Sweden with serious kidney complications.

But he suddenly suffered a massive cardiac arrest on board a Qatar Airways flight and he was immediately rushed to Al-Wakara Hospital in Doha where he died early Saturday (July 1).

He moved to Sweden with his family in the 1980s and returned to Bangladesh after the war crimes trial began to testify as a witness in the case against Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Molla.
