Road crashes claimed 274 lives in 13 days

Dhaka: Some 274 people were killed and 848 others injured in around 205 road accidents across the country in 13 days during the Eid holidays, according to Bangladesh Jatri Kallyan Samity (BJKS).
Besides, 106 people were killed and 14 others injured in 35 accidents in river and rail routes during the period from June 19 to July 1.
BJKS general secretary Mohammad Muzammel Haque Chowdhury disclosed this at a press briefing at the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) office on Tuesday.
He said the monitoring cell of the BJKS prepared the report based on reports published in 22 national dailies, six regional newspapers and eight online news portals.
The BJKS secretary general also placed 12 demands, including formation of a road accident research unit at the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry, initiatives for vehicle speed controlling, digitisation of vehicle fitness process and banning the plying of unfit and risky vehicles on highways etc.
