Woman, daughter killed in road crash

Comilla: Three people, including a woman and her son, were killed and two others injured when a goods-laden lorry rammed a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Lohipura area of Sadar Dakkhin upazila headquarters on Dhaka-Chittagong highway on Friday.

M Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Dakkhin Police Station, said the accident took place in the area around 11:00 am when a goods-laden lorry hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, leaving its two passengers - Mahmuda Akhtar and her minor son Arshad - dead on the spot and three others injured.

Meanwhile, Monir Hossain, the driver of auto-rickshaw, succumbed to his injuries on his way to hospital.

The injured - Maolana Ekram Hossain, husband of deceased Mahmuda Akhtar and their daughter Nafiza Akhter - were rescued by police and fire fighters and admitted to Comilla Medical College and Hospital, said Khademul Islam, sub-inspector of Sadar Dakkhin Police Station.

Maolana Ekram Hossain along with his family members was heading to his relative's house at Barura of the district by an auto-rickshaw from his Dhonaitori village of the upazila, the SI added.
