Seventy six families have remained marooned for one month as rain water does not recede due to embankments for shrimp farming at the Kamannagar area of Itagachha in Satkhira. The severity is increasing due to heavy rain.

Scarcity of drinking water, submerge of toilets and roads have created a miserable condition in the area. People are using spongewood-made rafts for communication. Around Sixty seedbeds have been damaged.

Locals said the waterlogging condition was created after some people started unplanned shrimp farming making several embankments to store water from the Ichamati River. Due to the embankments the rain water is not being able to make way through the lakes in the area.

A resident of the area Ali Azam Dablu said ‘People of seventy six families have been marooned due to heavy rain for the last few days. Our seedbeds are being damaged.’

Locals said that many of them are not being able to cook as their houses have been flooded. Children are being affected with skin diseases. Livestock have been shifted from their houses.  

Kamanagar social worker Shafiqur Rahman said ‘Eleven traders including Ejahar, Saiful Islam, and Sirajul Islam are farming shrimp after bringing water of Ichamati through Shakhara sluice gate. Water is not being receded due to the embankments made for the farming.’

The situation continues for one month though no steps have been taken regarding the issue. On Monday, Executive Magistrate Bishnupada Paul visited the area and brought clearance from the three traders that shrimp farmers themselves will clear the embankments for the passing of the water.

Bishnupada said possible measures are being taken and the condition will improve within a few days.
