Bagerhat: Amader Gram (Our Villages), a non-government organisation (NGO), has launched its village WiFi Programme covering multiple villages from single loop, first such ‘open to all’ enterprise in Bangladesh.
Under the ‘Amader Gram Cancer Care e-Health Programme’, the WiFi connection has so far been made available for two villages of Rampal upazila in Bagerhat district, said Reza Salim, project director of Amader Gram ICT4D project.
Local MP Talukdar Abdul Khaleque (Rampal-Mongla), formally launched the WiFi connectivity at a ceremony at Jhanjhaniya village of Rampal Upzila on Friday morning.
Reza informed that initially, two villages - Jhanjhaniya and Freeltala - have been brought under the WiFi connection aiming to diagnose cancer in remote areas. Local physicians in consultation with US doctors will help diagnose and detect cancer among marginal women using ICT.
“The connection is also available for Microsoft-sponsored Amader Gram IT education centers (Gyaan Kendra), local schools and for general people who are interested in knowledge building, he said.
On the first day (Friday), eight women were examined by a four-member medical team from Khulna Medical College, led by Dr Masuma Noorjahan.
Dr Richard Love, a US Oncologist, and Dr Tahmina Ferdousy, programme head of Amader Gram Cancer Care, assisted the team.
Amader Gram (Our Villages) is an ICT4D initiative of Bangladesh Friendship Education Society (BFES). The project, mostly centered and based on the village society, has been conceived as a demonstrative social innovation.
