‘Our profession is always neglected. We do not get fair price though price of things has increased. It is really difficult to run a family being in this profession,’ said Harikanth Mallik, a blacksmith of Dighirpar Bazar at Tongibari upazila in Munshiganj.

Some other blacksmiths, who are passing busy time before the Eid, also expressed sadness. Kanu Karmaker is one of them. His shop is in the Sadar market.

Kanu said, ‘Our ancestors did this job. I have been doing it for almost fifty years. Though we pass lazy times throughout the year, we get busy before the Eid-ul-Azha.’

Kanu said the price of products they make has increased from Tk 450/kg to Tk 600/kg.

‘We used to buy each sack of stone and of coal at Tk 700-800. Now the price has increased to Tk 3,500-4,000.

The sound of hammering is heard in Munshiganj till dark night. Blacksmiths are busy in making sharp instruments. Still, they are not happy. They think this industry might get vanished if the government does not take effective steps in this regard.
