Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities suspended five students for assaulting the university’s archaeology department teacher and assistant proctor, Julkarnain.

The university syndicate decided the suspension of the students in an urgent meeting at about 11:00pm on Wednesday.

A five-member investigation committee led by pro-vice chancellor was formed in this connection.

The students are Riad, Sonnet, Mafi, Shumon, and Twaki, students of different years of marketing department.

The university authorities said Julkarnain questioned Riad at about 3:45pm on Wednesday about the cocktail explosion in front of the vice-chancellor’s residence.

Riad hit to the teacher’s nose at a stage of the conversation.  

Riad and Sonnet were handed over to the police. University Chhatra Dal president Jakirul Islam claimed Riad as its activist.

Proctor Tapan Kumar Saha said disciplinary board of the university brought charges against five students for beating up a proctorial body member.   

JU Chhatra Dal president Zakirul Islam called blockade for indefinite period in this connection from Saturday.

Additional police have been deployed at the university campus area for avoiding any unpleasant situation.
