EBL officials to face music if involved in ATM scam: BB

Dhaka: Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor SK Sur Chowdhury on Sunday warned the central bank would not spare any official of the Eastern Bank Limited (EBL) if found involved in ATM card fraudulence.
‘We won’t spare anybody if found involved in withdrawing money from EBL's customers’ accounts,’ he said while talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function at a city hotel.
He said the central bank will investigate the allegation of withdrawing money by some officials of EBL from a number of its customers’ accounts.
The deputy governor said a team of the central bank's offsite supervision department will conduct investigations and then necessary actions will be taken on the basis of the report.
There are reports that a huge amount of money was withdrawn through ATM booth from a number of customers' accounts of the EBL on Friday noon.
ATM cards were used through fraudulence to withdraw the money. The EBL authorities instantly suspended the operation of its entire ATM booth transactions when it came to their notice.
However, the EBL authorities resumed the ATM transaction at 6:00pm on Friday. But its customers now only can withdraw money from its own ATM booths, not from that of any other banks.
Sur Chowdhury said the central bank would examine all the aspects of the EBL security measures and find out whether it followed the advice of the central bank in this regard.
