WB to extend support to BBIN projects: Tofail

Dhaka: The World Bank (WB) would provide financial and technical assistance to implement the projects in Bangladesh part related to Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal (BBIN), says Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed.

‘Initially the project in our side would be implemented involving Taka 1,000 crore,’ said the minister after having a views-exchange meeting with WB delegation led by WB Country Director Qimiao Fan at his secretariat office, reports BSS.

Commerce ministry would implement the project in Bangladesh side, as earlier four countries, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal (BBIN), struck a deal to facilitate regional trade and develop connectivity to foster growth.

He said the WB country director has lauded Bangladesh for developing its efficiency to implement mega projects.

The commerce minister sought WB cooperation to expedite and modernize the research activities of Bangladesh Foreign Trade Institute (BFTI) for the development of trade.

At present, the WB is providing assistance and cooperation with $ 10 billion to 40 sectors.

Mentioning that Bangladesh has attained strong base in food security WB Country Director said the country has stepped forward significantly in empowering and developing women and energy sector.

He said WB would continue support to Bangladesh for the development of infrastructure, roads and communication, energy and human resources.

Qimiao Fan, however, opined that participation of private entrepreneurs in the development activities is also important for the country.

Additional secretaries Shuvashish Basu, Kazi Salah Uddin Akbar and Manoj Kumar Roy, and joint secretary Munir Chowdhury were present.
