Padmavati first song ‘Ghoomar’ rocks the viewers
She walks in the coy bride but it is hard to keep the queen hidden for long. We are talking about Deepika Padukone as Padmavati in the first song from the film called Ghoomar, reports Hindustan Times.
A long way from the frenzied energy that Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Deepika rustled up for Nagada in Raam-Leela, Padmavati’s Ghoomar is royal in its treatment.
Deepika’s Padmavati may be a girl in love with her husband, played by Shahid Kapoor, but first she is a queen.
In fact, the song is a dance number and was the first sequence to be shot for the film directed by Bhansali. The film also features Ranveer Singh as invader Alauddin Khilji and Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh in lead roles.
Bhansali has composed the song that has been penned by A M Turaz and Rajasthani Lyrics by Swaroop Khan. Shreya Ghoshal has lent her voice to the song picturised on Deepika and Shahid.
Ghoomar is a traditional dance form performed by princesses and queens of Rajasthan and its moves spell grace and elegance. It involves twirling in circles and coordinated hand movements and foot work. Ghoomar is also performed by new brides when they are welcomed into their marital homes.
Ghoomar’s name derives from the Hindi word ‘Ghoomna’ which literally means twirling and flowing dresses of Rajasthani women help make the dance quite a visual treat and striking to watch.
Talking about the Ghoomar song, Deepika had said earlier, ‘I started preparing for this film and character several months before we started filming. But it was for the Ghoomar song [sequence] that I walked onto the set as Padmavati for the first time.’
It has been almost a spiritual experience for the actor. She told Hindustan Times, ‘The shooting of the film began with this song, and I’ll never forget that day. I remember approaching my mark for the first shot.
It was almost as if Padmavati’s soul had entered my body. I could feel her presence; and, in fact, I still do. It’s one of those rare moments in an actor’s life where it’s going to take a very long time before it actually leaves the system.’
Deepika and Ranveer team up with Bhansali for the third time, after successful films Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela (2013) and Bajirao Mastani (2015). Padmavati is the first association of Shahid and Bhansali. The first look of the three characters as well as the film’s trailer have been well received, making it one of the most awaited films of the year.
The film has been in the eye of controversies with fringe Rajput groups protesting its making for ostensibly showing a romantic sequence between Padmavati and Khilji. Both Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the film’s team has dismissed these rumours. As the film’s release approaches, the controversies have got a new lease of life.
Produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Bhansali Productions, Padmavati will release worldwide on December 1.
