The embalmed body of Bollywood superstar Sridevi is being taken to the Pawan Hans crematorium in Mumbai's Ville Parle, reports NDTV.

The mortal remains were wrapped in India’s national flag and placed in a glass casket. At the Celebration Sports Club in Mumbai, thousands of fans and top actors paid their last respects to the Bollywood icon.

The vehicle has big portraits of the superstar on the front and side while the actress lies in a bridal wear, as visible in pictures and videos uploaded by Indian news websites.

She will be cremated with state honours in the afternoon.

Sridevi, 54, died in a hotel room in Dubai on Saturday. A forensic report said she accidentally drowned in a bathtub after falling unconscious. After investigations, the actor's body was released by the Dubai authorities on Tuesday and was flown to Mumbai by private jet.

On Wednesday morning, Sridevi's body was brought to the Celebration Sports Club, where people who had come from other states like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu lined up to say goodbye to their favourite star, who ruled Bollywood and southern cinema over a five-decade-long career.

Sridevi's family requested people in a statement to join them to pay respects to the ‘remarkable actor, beloved wife and loving mother’ at the club from 9:30 am onwards.

But teary-eyed fans had started queuing up by dawn outside the Celebration Sports Club.

Top stars such as Kajol, Deepika Padukone and Hema Malini were at the club and many are expected to also attend the funeral.

Nearly 200 policemen have been posted at the Mumbai club and a police band has been deployed in honour of Sridevi, who received the Padma Shri award in 2013.

Sridevi had gone to Dubai along with her husband Boney Kapoor and their younger daughter Khushi, to attend the wedding of Kapoor's nephew Mohit Marwah. After the wedding, Sridevi stayed on in Dubai, while Boney Kapoor went back to Mumbai with their daughter.

Boney Kapoor returned to Dubai on Saturday to surprise his wife, according to media reports.

Sridevi was getting ready to go out for dinner with her husband when she collapsed in the bathroom of Dubai's Jumeirah Emirates Towers hotel on Saturday evening.

A medical team failed to revive her and she was declared dead at a hospital.

Authorities in Dubai completed legal formalities over three days before releasing Sridevi's body to her family for embalming and saying that, ‘The case has now been closed.’ Boney Kapoor accompanied his wife's body from Dubai last night to Mumbai. His brother and actor Anil Kapoor, who was also Sridevi's co-star in many blockbuster films, received them at the airport.

They arrived at the Kapoor home in Green Acres at the posh Lokhandwala Complex after midnight. Despite the late hour, several hundreds of fans were waiting outside when a motorcade, including an ambulance with Sridevi's body, reached, reports NDTV.

Sridevi is survived by her husband Boney Kapoor and two young daughters Jhanvi, 20, and Khushi, 17.
