Bollywood stars join the grand Ambani party
Over the weekend, happy news came in that the business community can expect to see a glamorous wedding this year. Akash Ambani, son of Mukesh and Nita Ambani of Reliance Industries, got engaged to schoolmate Shloka Mehta, who is the daughter of diamond magnate Russel and Mona Mehta. After a function in Goa, the big blowout took place last night at Antilia, the plush Ambani home in Mumbai. The families pulled out all stops to celebrate the official engagement of Akash and Shloka, who went to Dhirubhai Ambani International School together, reports NDTV.
As we've come to expect with an Ambani bash, the coming together of two of India's largest business families was marked by one of the starriest dos we've seen this year. Everyone from Shah Rukh Khan to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to Katrina Kaif attended - many cricketers too, of course. However, we got the feeling that the celeb guests were caught somewhat off-guard by the invite - perhaps the engagement was as unexpected for the stars as it was for the rest of us. We say this because of the lack of uniformity in the outfits that the celebs wore - there was absolutely no semblance of any sort of dress code and these nine celebrity spottings from the night gave us a range of looks that ranged between OTT, drastically underdressed and completely random.
Newly minted couple Akash and Shloka were of course appropriately dressed - he in a blue single-breasted suit with a vest and white shirt, she in a pink and gold brocade halter gown with her hair in a half ponytail.
Socialite Natasha Poonawalla attended the event with husband, Adar Poonawala, and matched the tone of the evening sartorially. She wore a ruched tulle Dolce & Gabbana gown with floral motifs over it. This was completed with glittery Christian Louboutin pumps, mauve toned makeup and voluminous hair.
Katrina Kaif, however, looked like she had had put on the first thing she pulled out of her closet. Her A-line rose toned Luisa Beccaria dress with strappy heels and hair left loose was an uninspired look, to say the least. It seemed like her invite just arrived in the mail, leaving her with a rushed effort for her styling and grooming. Even going a few tines darker with the dress would have prevented it from washing out the actress. Better luck next time, Katrina?
Kiran Rao was snapped with filmmaker Karan Johar and her extremely casual boho vibe seemed a little out of place for an event so high society. She paired a mustard blazer over a white side slit kurta over a metallic pleated skirt from NorBlack NorWhite. Finishing it off were riveted black sandals and a single earring. While Kiran did teach us a thing or two about summer layering with her trademark aesthetic, the ensemble just didn't fit into a formal engagement party. Perhaps for the front row of the next fashion week, then. Her buddy Karan looked suitably suave at the function in a classic black suit with a navy shirt and black spiked loafers.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan brought along an adorable plus one with her to the party - her daughter Aaradhya Bachchan, who seems to love the camera. Aishwarya was red carpet ready in a strapless black Osman gown, a matching clutch and bright pink lips while young Aaradhya smiled for the cameras in a pink tulle dress, glittering shoes and a matching headband. Going by how excessive her ballroom gown is for a function like this, we think Aishwarya may have picked out a look from ones she's trying out for the Cannes Film Festival. She was definitely more dressed for a big engagement than Kiran, though.
Now, John Abraham, on the other hand, was at the other end of the spectrum. In a checked shirt, jeans and sneakers, you'd think he was heading to pick up a latte at Starbucks rather than attending one of the country's most illustrious engagement functions.
Cricketer Zaheer Khan and his wife, actress Sagarika Ghatge looked lovely together and were one of the most appropriately dressed for the occasion. Zaheer wore a checked blazer with a shirt and jeans while Sagarika wore a blue single shouldered gown.
Perfect to bring the starry function to a close was the couple posing with Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan, who wore a dapper black suit. Of course, King Khan looked fine and dandy for the occasion.
