After Rajkumar Hirani, Ram Gopal Varma to make a film on Sanjay Dutt titled Sanju: The Real Story
One of the biggest movies of 2018 was Sanju, as it was a biopic based on the controversial life of Sanjay Dutt. Directed by Dutt’s friend and filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, Ranbir Kapoor stepped into the shoes of the rugged actor.
While the movie was a blockbuster at the box office, domestic and worldwide and the star cast was appreciated for their power-packed performances, many criticised the movie for whitewashing Dutt’s image. Dutt’s most controversial moment was when he was convicted under the Arms Act during the 1993 Mumbai blasts. However, in Sanju, it was not dealt with from all angles.
And it seems that another filmmaker has taken it upon himself to rectify the whitewashing. It is none other than Ram Gopal Varma who is making a movie tentatively titled Sanju: The Real Story, according to Mumbai Mirror. The movie will only focus on Dutt’s connection to the 1993 Mumbai blasts, reports pinkvilla.com.
Ram confirmed the news with MM and said, ‘Yes, I am making the film.’
A source revealed that Ram Gopal Varma liked Sanju for its intensity but was disappointed with how they tackled Sanjay’s tryst with the law. ‘That Dutt was doing drugs, was traumatised by his mother’s battle with cancer [she died just three days before the release of his first film Rocky], had multiple flings, many of them one-night stands, is all well documented,’ the source stated.
RGV’s film will deal with details such as people who threatened Dutt and his family, how Sanjay got the rifle, how the firearm was delivered to him and how it was disposed of.
Sanjay Dutt and Ram Gopal Varma have worked in two films, namely Daud (1997) and Department (2012).
