It is actually the end of an era. Hollywood star Johnny Depp, who became a global phenomenon after his portrayal of a drunk pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow in 5 Pirates of the Caribbean films will no longer be seen playing the iconic role. In fact, we’ll no longer be seeing the iconic character itself on the big for near future at least. A couple of days ago, the news of Pirates of the Caribbean franchise going in for a reboot was doing the rounds and it was reported that Disney is looking for Deadpool movie writers to give the franchise a new and fresh spin.

This was after the last film Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales or Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge (as it was called in India and some other countries) was trashed by film critics around the world and in its home market it made the least amount of money when compared to all the previous films. Johnny Depp who had received his first Oscar nomination for the best actor for his performance as Captain Jack Sparrow in the first film of the series received a golden raspberry award nomination for worst actor for same role 12 years and 5 films later, reports timesnownews.com.

Writer Stuart Beattie, who wrote the original film in the series confirmed the news to Daily Mail. He said,

‘I think he’s had a great run. Obviously, he’s made that character his own and it’s become the character he’s most famous for now. ‘And kids all over the world love him as that character so I think it’s been great for him, it’s been great for us, so I’m just very, very happy about it.’

He added that Jack Sparrow will be his legacy. And Depp will always be remembered and known for this iconic role.

‘I think Jack Sparrow will be his legacy. It’s the only character he’s played five times, it’s the character he dresses up in to visit children in hospitals, it’s what he’ll be remembered for. Before Jack Sparrow came along, [Depp] was considered this kind of quirky, independent actor that made these really cool little Tim Burton films, but he was by no means a movie star and a lot of people thought we were crazy for casting him at the time. Because he wasn’t a proven commodity; you know, a big movie star. And we were making a big movie and we were putting this quirky, independent actor in the middle of it and people thought we were crazy. The fact that it worked is a miracle. They were certainly nervous watching the rushes everyday but when it all came together, something just clicked and it was magic and connected with audiences. I’m proud to be a part of it.’

Further talking about the first film’s two Oscar nominations, he said, ‘For a big, commercial popcorn movie to get a Oscar nomination, for the actor, is incredible. So that was a lot of fun seeing that.

It is quite shocking for fans to see this much-loved iconic character to go in such a way. Even though Hugh Jackman’s exit as Wolverine was painful for pop culture nerds but the silver lining was at least he went on an all-time high with the classic Logan. But Johnny Depp wasn’t as lucky.’

Also, in case there is any confusion, it’s not that just Johnny Depp has been ousted, his character Captain Jack Sparrow too has been dropped from the reboot films, if reports are to be believed.
