Popular film actress Diti laid to eternal rest

Dhaka: Popular film actress Parveen Sultana Diti, who died of brain cancer on Sunday, was laid to eternal rest in Narayanganj on Monday.

She was buried by the graves of her parents at their family graveyard at Dattapara village in Sonargaon upazila in the afternoon following her third namaz-e-janaza at the Dattapara mosque after Zohr prayers.

Earlier, two more janazas were held in the capital - one in Film Development Corporation (FDC) at about 10:30am and the other at Gulshan Azad Mosque.

Later, her body was taken to her village home Dattapara at noon.  

Diti, who had been suffering from brain cancer, breathed her last at United Hospital in the capital around 4:05pm on Sunday.

The popular film actress of the 90’s was admitted to the United Hospital on January 8 upon her return from India.

She was diagnosed with a brain tumour and underwent a surgery at Madras Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in Chennai, India on July 29 last year.

On her return after the operation, Diti again fell ill in November and underwent another operation in India.

As there was no sign of improvement in her condition, she was brought back home in January last and admitted to United Hospital.

Diti was married to film actor Sohel Chowdhury who was shot to death in 1998.

Diti won the Bangladesh National Film Award as the best actress in a supporting role in 1987 for her performance in ‘Shami Stri’.

She is survived by daughter Lamia Chowdhury, son Shafayet Chowdhury and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn her death.

Her best films include Hiramoti, Dui Jibon, Bhai Bondhu, Usila, Lady Inspector, Khuner Bodla, Ajker Hungama, Shesh Upohar, Chorom Aghat, Shami Stri,Aporadhi, Kaliya, Kaal Sokale, Megher Kole Rod, Akash Choya Bhalobasha and Mayamoy.
