'Home' comfy atop N. America box office
Los Angeles, United States: Animated children’s film “Home,” about an unpopular space alien forced to flee his own kind, debuted at the top of the North American weekend box office, industry figures showed Monday.
The DreamWorks movie, featuring “Big Bang Theory” star Jim Parsons as the voice of alien Oh and singer Rihanna as his human friend, raked in a whopping $52.1 million, box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations reported.
It easily bested debut buddy comedy “Get Hard,” about a prison-bound white investment banker (Will Ferrell) who hires a black car washer (Kevin Hart) for lessons on surviving the slammer, which earned $33.8 million.
Dystopian action thriller “Insurgent,” the second big-screen instalment based on Veronica Roth’s best-selling “Divergent” book series, fell to third with $21.5 million, after its debut at the top last week.
Disney’s live action “Cinderella” remake worked its magic in fourth place, earning $17 million, with “Downton Abbey” star Lily James as the enchanted princess and Cate Blanchett as her wicked stepmother.
Indie horror flick “It Follows,” which opened weeks ago but debuted over the weekend in wide release, took fifth place and $3.8 million in ticket sales.
Sixth went to British spy spoof “Kingsman: The Secret Service” starring Colin Firth, with just under $3 million.
Religious drama “Do You Believe” took seventh place with $2.3 million, and action flick “Run All Night,” featuring grizzled tough guy Liam Neeson, was in eighth place with $2.2 million.
Sequel “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” featuring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Richard Gere, raked in $2.1 million to earn ninth place.
Sean Penn action movie “The Gunman” rounded out the top 10 with $2 million.
