Update: 02 January, 2017, 19:46

As the year starts, IMDb publishes the top lists of various categories according to the achievements and popularities, based on a surveyor called ‘STARmeter.’ These rankings are based on the actual page views of IMDb’s more than 250 million unique monthly visitors. IMDb selects stars that consistently ranked the highest on the IMDb weekly STARmeter chart throughout 2016.

Here are top 10 celebrities according to the IMDb STARmeter:

10.  Leonardo DiCaprio:

This popular actor finally snagged the most expected Best Actor Oscar for his downright gritty work in ‘The Revenant.’ It tested Leo’s personal limits. He also capped 2016 with ‘Before the Flood,’ a documentary he produced about climate change.

9. Haley Bennett:

Harley Bennett played scientist Estelle in first-person shooter flick ‘Hardcore Henry,’ justice-minded Emma Cullen in ‘The Magnificent Seven,’ and the enigmatic Megan Hipwell in ‘The Girl on the Train.’ She successfully portrays young actress Mamie Murphy in ‘Rules Don’t Apply’ and Ellie Briess in ‘A Kind of Murder.’

8. Daisy Ridley:

‘The Force Awakens’ was appreciated by the global box office; Daisy Ridley became a certifiable megastar. In her lead character Rey, sci-fi fans found a female protagonist for the next generation, who was independent, empathic, adaptable young woman and unafraid to mix it up with the worst of the Dark Side. She landed a role in the star-studded ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ and returns for Episode VIII.

7. Alicia Vikander:

The versatile Swedish actress Alicia Vikander began the year as an awards season darling, racking up a slew of nominations and big wins for her performance as painter Gerda Wegener in ‘The Danish Girl,’ in which the role helps to illuminate the emotional complexities and experiences embedded within gender reassignment surgery, ultimately earned Vikander a ‘Best Supporting Actress Oscar.’ Later in 2016, she starred opposite ‘Matt Damon’ in the latest ‘Jason Bourne’ flick and with real-life love interest ‘Michael Fassbender’ in ‘The Light Between Oceans.’ In 2016 her being named as the newest Lara Croft in ‘Tomb Raider,’ set to debut in 2018.

6. Gal Gadot:

In the movie ‘Batman v Superman’ Gal Gadot’s played the character of the Wonder Woman, that kept all the comic book fans bustling for months. After the movie’s release, Warner Bros. kept momentum rolling through the summer by releasing two blockbuster trailers during San Diego Comic-Con: One for the much anticipated Justice League and another for the equally talked-about Wonder Woman standalone, also to be released in 2017. In both, Gadot was front and center, reprising her role as Diana Prince. Successful as 2016 was for Gadot with respect to DC Comics diehards she rounded out her year with turns in the action comedy like ‘Keeping Up With the Joneses,’ crime drama ‘Triple 9,’ and ‘Criminal.’

5. Morena Baccarin:

Brazilian native Baccarin blasted herself onto Top 10 list for 2016 by virtue of strong showings with both movie and TV fans. The year’s bawdiest comic book film, Deadpool, she played the character Vanessa who is a fictional superhero, a former member of X-Force, published by Marvel Comics. Off the big screen, she continued to portray series regular Dr. Leslie Tompkins on FOX’s ‘Gotham.’ The show was a source of both professional and personal success this past year.

4. Tom Hardy:

IMDb’s top star of 2015 didn’t fall too far from the top in the 2016 list. Sustaining by his haunting performance in ‘The Revenant,’ he played hard-to-love but impossible-to-ignore John Fitzgerald. After movie awards season was complete, the British actor kept TV fans buzzing as Alfie Solomons in Season 5 of cult favorite ‘Peaky Blinders.’ In 2017, he’s set to star in period miniseries ‘Taboo,’ which he created in collaboration with his father Chips. Tom plays rogue adventurer and would-be shipping magnate James Keziah Delaney.

3. Millie Bobby Brown:

In a year of remakes, reboots, and nostalgia-tinged titles, no television series seemed to captivate audiences quite like ‘Stranger Things.’ The series is based on ‘80s-inspired conspiracies, disappearing characters, and cultural references kept sparking online discussions even long after the show debuted in July. The central character was Eleven, the mysterious psychokinetically gifted girl, and the arresting young actress, excellently played by Millie Bobby Brown. Her performance impressed both young and old viewers and she became the top of IMDb’s Top 10 Breakout Stars of 2016. Her popularity has allowed her to reach even more audiences in popular music: In November, she starred in a music video for Sigma’s single ‘Find Me.’

2. Emilia Clarke:

‘Game of Thrones’ Queen Emilia Clarke occupies the number 2 spot on the ‘Top 10 Stars list.’  Doubtlessly she was lifted by the durable popularity of the hit HBO fantasy drama. In Season 6, her character Daenerys found new strength in addition to taking destiny into her own hands with the help of some fire. In June, Clarke proved that she could headline a romantic movie, playing a lead character who finds some inner strength of her own in ‘Me Before You’ as a romantic heroin.

1. Margot Robbie:

Margot Robbie makes the leap to the top as IMDb’s Top Star of 2016. It was a year in which the Australian actress displayed her versatility in a trio of notable big-screen performances. She played BBC correspondent Tanya Vanderpoel in the war comedy ‘Whiskey Tango Foxtrot’ and followed that with a turn as Jane Porter in ‘The Legend of Tarzan.’ However, Robbie’s most notable work in 2016 was as psychiatrist-gone-bad Harley Quinn in ‘Suicide Squad.’ It’s a memorable, visually striking role that not only inspired a future standalone film but too-many-to-count lookalike costumes at comic book conventions and Halloween parties.
