Ramadan begins Friday
The holy month of Ramadan begins on Friday as the new moon was not sighted anywhere in Bangladesh sky on Wednesday.
During the Arabic lunar month, Muslims of the country will fast for self-purification.
However, in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere in the Gulf, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar Ramadan will start on Thursday as the crescent moon was not sighted Tuesday.
More than 1.5 billion Muslims around the world will mark the month, during which believers abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and from other bodily pleasures from dawn until sunset.
They also try to avoid evil thoughts and deeds.
Ramadan is sacred to Muslims because tradition says the Holy Quran was revealed to their prophet Mohammed (PBUH) during that month.
It is followed by the Eid al-Fitr festival.
