Sufferings mount in Dhaka as rain not ready to relent
Dhaka: The city dwellers woke up on Wednesday morning to see further heavy rains inundating many parts of the capital, causing unbearable woes to them for the second consecutive day.
Roads in many areas were submerged by rainwater due to the relentless rainfall. The roads in Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Lalmatia, Dhanmodi, Karwanbazar, Kakrail, Shanitanagar, Moghbazar, Mouchak, Malibagh, Rampura and Badda, areas went under knee-deep water due to the rainfall.
Bangladesh Metrological Department recorded 64 mm of rainfall in the capital from 12:00am (night) to 3:00pm.
Commuters faced problems in reaching their destinations due to the traffic mess triggered by the torrential rains. Rickshaw-pullers and CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers charged excessive fares as they did on Tuesday, taking advantage of the bad weather and traffic disorder.
Mashiur Rahman, a government official, said he went to Shanitanagar intersection amid drizzle on Wednesday morning to get a rickshaw as his office time was approaching.
‘But, I found all the areas of Shanitanagar intersection reeling under knee-deep water while there was no way to move from there. Finally, I got a rickshaw-puller who agreed to carry me, but at a high fare,’ he added.
Besides, many students could not attend their schools as they faced trouble in managing vehicles on water-logged roads caused by continues downpour.
‘My son who studies in Dhanmondhi Junior Laboratory School, but he couldn’t go to his school due to the rain,’ said Mahmudul Islam of Mirpur.
The rain slowed down vehicular movement leading to traffic chaos on the roads. Vehicles were seen moving at snail’s pace on the streets while commuters got stuck in long tailbacks for hours at different points.
The businesses in the city also faced a setback as the clients and buyers did not go to shopping malls due to the adverse weather and harassment on city streets. ‘We’re passing a dull day as we get very few customers today,’ said Jahangir Alam, a shopkeeper of Mouchak.
