24 killed in road crashes
Dhaka: At least 24 people were killed and 58 others injured in road accidents in Dhaka, Sirajganj, Rajshahi, Jessore, Rangpur, and Bagerhat on Tuesday.
Of them, nine lost their lives in a single road crash in Sirajganj while seven more were killed in another accident in Rajshahi.
In Sirajganj, nine people, including five women and a child, were killed and four others injured in a collision between an oil tanker and a human hauler at Garadah on the Bogra-Nagarbari Highway in Shahjadpur upazila in the morning.
The deceased are Makbul Hossain, 40; Banya, 10, daughter of Rajab Ali; Ozifa Begum, 60, wife of Hasen Pramanik; Jalal Uddin, 40, and his wife Anjana Khatun, 25; Firoza Begum, 35, wife of Razaul Karim; Renu Khatun, 40, wife of Tara Miah; Purni Khatun, 18, and the human hauler driver Abdus Sobhan, 40. All the deceased hailed from Boro Maharajpur village in the upazila.
The Baghabari-bound oil tanker from Ullahpara collided with the human hauler coming from the opposite direction with 22 people after one of its wheels deflated in the area at about 6:15 am, leaving five people dead on the spot and seven others injured, said Shahjadpur police officer-in-charge Rezaul Haque.
The injured were taken to Shahjadpur and Ullapara health complexes where three of them succumbed to their injuries while another died on the way to Bogra Mohammad Ali Hospital.
Meanwhile, an unidentified schoolgirl was killed and four others were injured in a collision between a bus and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in the area at about 12:00pm.
In Rajshahi, at least seven people, including a couple, were killed and 40 others injured in as two buses collided at Maskata Dighi area in Motihar thana of the city in the afternoon.
The deceased are Farzana Sheikh Lubna, daughter of Faruk Hossain of Bausha area of Bagha upazila and a second year student of Rajshahi College; Ajafar, 65 and his wife Beli Ara, 50 of Norshia Gomostopur area of Chapainawabganj; Abu Bakar Siddiq, 65, of Durgapur area; Mainuddin, 65 of Puthia upazila; bus driver Shahidul Islam Shahid of ‘National Travels’ and bus driver Miantu Miah of ‘Arpa paribahan’, hailing from Tokiyan village of Natore Sadar upazila.
Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of Motihar Police Station, said the accident took place at about 1:30 pm when a Rajshahi-bound bus of ‘National Travels’ from Dhaka collided head-on with another ‘Arpa Paribahan’ bus coming from the opposite direction and then hit two human haulers, leaving seven people killed on the spot and others injured.
In Jessore, three people were killed and seven others injured as a Jessore-bound bus plunged into a roadside ditch on Jessore-Benapole highway in Malonchi area of Sadar upazila in the morning.
The deceased are Ohed Ali, Ayub Hossain of Teroghoria village, and Ali Hossain, 18, of Durgapur village in Sadar upazila.
Shikder Akkas Ali, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station, said the accident took place in the area at about 11:00am, leaving 10 people injured.
The injured were admitted to Jessore 250-bedded Hospital where three of them succumbed to their injuries.
In Rangpur, two motorcyclists were killed as a goods-laden trolley hit their bike in Modern Crossing area of the city in the afternoon.
The deceased are Polash and Siam.
In Dhaka, a young man was killed as a vehicle ran him over in front of Molla Tower, opposite to Bangladesh Television Bhaban, in Rampura area in the morning.
The deceased is Ujjal, 20.
In Bagerhat, a man was killed and five others were injured as a passenger bus overturned on Khulna-Mongla highway in Babur Bari area of Rampal upazila in the morning.
The deceased is Rezaul Khan, 45, son of Chanda Khan, hailing from Dakhsin Khanpur village of Sadar upazila.
