Ensure safety around Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover constructions: HC
Dhaka: The High Court on Sunday asked the authorities concerned to take necessary safety measures for pedestrians in Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover construction site areas within 15 days to avoid further accidents.
An HC bench comprising Justice Obaidul Hasan and Justice Krishna Debnath passed the order after hearing a writ petition.
The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why directives would not be given to compensate the family of construction worker Emon who died after an iron rod fell on him at the flyover construction site.
The Local Government secretary, Local Government Engineering Department chief engineer, Dhaka’s deputy commissioner, police commissioner, flyover project director and construction company managing director have been asked to come up with the reply within four weeks.
On March 19, adv Amit Dasgupta filed the petition with the HC in the form of pubic interest litigation seeking its directives for adequate safety measures in Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover construction site areas and compensation for the victim’s family.
Talking to reporters, Amit said the windowpanes of his private car were damaged after a stone fell on the vehicle in the flyover site area on March 12.
Later, the construction company got his car repaired at a garage in Bangla Motor area, he said.
According to information provided by the garage employees, nearly 200 incidents of falling stones and iron rods on vehicles occurred in the area and the last incident left Emon dead, Amit said.
On March 16, Emon, 25, died after a piece of rod fell on him from above while he was working at the construction site in front of the Daily Janakantha Bhaban.
