4 minors drown in rip current in Kutubdia
Cox’s Bazar: Four children were drowned after being caught in a riptide in the Bay of Bengal near the Kutubdia upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Thursday afternoon.
The deceased are Noyonmoni, around 11 years, daughter of Abul Hossain, Misbah Uddin, aged 7, son of Akhter Hossain, Shumi Akhter, believed to be 8, daughter of Kamal Hossain, and Piyamoni, aged 5, daughter of Kawsar Hamid.
The North Dhurang union council Chairman ASM Shahriar Chowdhury on Friday morning told journalists the children went to visit their relatives on Thursday morning when they caught in a riptide and drowned in the bay.
Later, they were found in critical condition in the evening and took to Kutubdia Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead.
The victims’ family got government aid immediately after the accident.
The Kutubdia Upazila Executive Officer (acting) Rabiul Alam said each of the victims’ family received Tk 15,000 and a sack of rice.
Government officials also alerted people to be careful, as the rip current is entering into Kutudia due to embankment.
