Indian police has reportedly arrested Bangladeshi-born British industrialist Ragib Ali who along with his family had left Bangladesh after an arrest warrant had been issued against him in connection with two cases filed over grabbing land of an endowment property.

Sylhet Additional police superintendent Sugyan Chakma said Indian police arrested the industrialist from Karimganj in India.

The Indian police arrested Ragib Ali on Thursday morning as the industrialist failed to show any legal documents in favour of his stay in India

Ragib Ali, together with his son Abdul Hai, daughter-in-law Ms. Hai, grandson, and two other boys, went to India through Zakiganj immigration and customs office at about 5:00pm on 11 August this year, confirmed Sylhet additional police superintendent Sugyan Chakma on 12 August.

‘They had legal papers with them,’ added the police officer.

A Sylhet court on 10 August issued arrest warrants against six people, including industrialist Ragib Ali and three of his family members, in two cases filed over grabbing land of an endowment property.

The other persons are Ragib Ali’s son Abdul Hai, son-in-law Abdul Kadir, daughter Rozina Kadir, Tarapur Tea Estate caretaker Pankaj Kumar Gupta, and Ali’s relative Dewan Mostak Majid, who is from Rajnagar in Moulvibazar.

Sylhet Chief Judicial Magistrate court judge Saifuzzaman Hiru issued the arrest warrant after accepting two charge-sheets against them.

Police submitted the charge-sheets to Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate Court on 10 July. Ragib Ali was shown accused in both the charge sheets.

Sylhet Sadar land commissioner SM Abdul Hye filed the cases with the Sylhet Kotwali police on 27 September 2005.
