Sylhet: An elderly woman, who along with her family members fell sick after eating patka (puffer) fish at Uttarmail village in Jaintapur upazila on Tuesday, died at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital on Wednesday morning, rising the death toll to six.

The deceased is Shafatunnesa, in her fifties, wife of Omar Ali, a resident of Tobang village in the upazila.

Brigadier General Abdus Sabur Miah, director of the hospital, said Shafatunnesa was brought to the hostpital on Wednesday morning when duty doctors declared her dead.

On Tuesday, five people died and five others fell sick reportedly after eating puffer fish at Uttarmail village in Jaintapur upazila on Monday.

Jaintapur upazila council Chairman Joynul Abedin said Rahim bought the puffer fish from a local bazaar and his family had a meal prepared with it at night.

Later, they fell sick and started vomiting at about 3:00pm on Tuesday.

Four of them died on the way to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital while another one succumbed to the injuries at the hospital, said officer-in-charge of Jaintapur Police Station Shafiul Kabir.
