4 bodies recovered, 20 missing in Sandwip boat capsize

Chittagong: Four bodies were recovered after a passenger trawler capsized at the Sandwip channel in Chittagong on Sunday evening.
Police said around 20 people are still missing as the boat carrying 55 passengers sank in the channel of the Bay of Bengal near Guptachhora terminal at about 6:45pm after getting caught in inclement weather.
Sandwip police Officer-in-charge (OC) Shamsul Islam said three bodies were recovered from the adjacent area at about 12:30am while that of another unidentified man in the morning.
Three of the deceased are Sachindra Jaldas, Boroda Jaldas, Salauddin. However, the bodies were kept at the Sandwip police station.
Later, the local people and police continued their rescue operation but could not find anybody.
The OC said Navy’s divers resumed the rescue operation at about 8:00am on Monday.
He said some 25 people went missing around 12 people managed to swim ashore after the boat capsized.
Local people and coast guard members rescued three people including a woman alive. They were sent to Sandwip Upazila Health Complex.
The OC said coast guard and police members along with local people started rescue operation immediately after the accident.
