Road crashes kill 9

Dhaka: At least nine people, including three of a family, were killed and 20 others injured in separate road accidents in Kandail of Narsingdi and Delduar of Tangail on Wednesday.

In Narsingdi, six people were killed in a head-on collision between a bus and a covered van at Kandail on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Madhabdi upazila in the morning.

The deceased were Sumi Begum, 16, covered van driver Abdur Rahman, 48, Rabiullah, 18, Hena Begum, 28, Mokles Mia, 55, Abdul Kadir, 40.

Madhabdi Police Station Officer-in-charge Illias Ahmed said the Dhaka-bound bus coming from Monohardi of Narsingdi collided with the Bhairab-bound covered van and then both the vehicles fell into a roadside ditch at about 7:00am, leaving four people dead on the spot and 22 others injured.

Among the injured, one died on way to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital while another on way to Dhaka for treatment.

In Tangail, a mother and her two children died as a speedy bus hit them while crossing the road on Dhaka-Tangail Highway in Dubail area of Delduar at about 3:00pm.

Assistant sub-inspector Makbul Hossain of Delduar Police Station said the trio died on the spot as a Dhaka-bound bus hit them in the afternoon.

The deceased were Saima Begum, 35, wife of Tara Mia of Nalapara village in Delduar, her daughter Tarina Aktar, 13, and son Tanvir Ahmed, 7.

Police seized the bus while its driver and his helper managed to flee, Makbul said.

The bodies were sent to Tagail General Hospital for autopsy, he said.
