This amazing seven-foot-high dragon cake would be enough to make even Mary Berry proud.

The project organised by Hannah Edwards, 35, from Hemel Hempstead, London, saw her bring together cake artist from around the world to produce the dragon, affectionately named Craig, and other mystical creatures.

Weighing around 100kg as well as being 5 metres long, the dragon took around six months to complete and is made up of foam, sugar icing and sponge cake all mounted onto a bike frame, including fully functioning wings, rotating head, light up eyes and even breathes real smoke.

Steph Parker, 30 , and her dad, Paul, helped to create the main structure in their shed in Atherstone, Warwickshire, before it took pride of place at this year’s International Cake show at the NEC, Birmingham.

Steph said: “It has been hard work but to see it all come together is amazing.

“Its lovely to think that people from across the world have joined together to make this and how it all fitted into place so well.

“We came up with the idea of using a bike frame and built a structure around it.

“We just thought we should go big or go home!”

Hannah, also known as the Cake Illusionist, came up with the ‘magical dragon machine’ theme last year, that saw around 70 cake specialist from around the world, including America, South Africa and the Netherlands, make a piece of the cake.

Hannah said: “The main body of the cake was made by us in the UK, but his feet where all made in different locations and all the mystical creatures, tinkering children and futuristic florals came through the post.

“We had to think of a theme that would work when all the parts came together and would still look coherent.

“They just boxed them up with lots of padding and we prayed the cakes were in one piece when they got here, luckily they all were.

“The team of eight people worked on the cake solidly for four days before the show, moving the dragon to a marquee, before finally displaying it at the NEC.

The display came complete with specialist projections and soundtrack to bring the dragon and his scrapyard friends to life and the team were supported by several sponsors.

However, you may be wondering what is going to happen to all that cake when the show comes to an end.

All 500 servings of the cake will be boxed up and donated to Coffee4Craig, a charity working with homeless people in Manchester.

Hannah said: “We wanted to ensure a worthwhile home for the considerable amount of cake that would be left over.

“On Sunday a representative from the charity will be coming along to cut the cake before it’s boxed up and taken to the homeless shelter.”

Steph said: “After all this, I hope to ride the dragon out of the show before taking it home and putting Craig into storage for now.

“Blood, sweat, and tears have gone into this project but it was definitely worthwhile.”
