Sylhet: Four Ijtema devotees were killed as a bus carrying them collided head-on with a truck at Shurma upazila in south Shurma of Sylhet on Monday morning.

Eight other people were also injured in the accident which took place on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway, said south Shurma police officer-in-charge (OC) Khairul Fazal.

The deceased are Abu Bakkar, in his fifties, Akbar Ali, around 50 years old, and Abdul Jafur, in his forties. Identity of another deceased could not be known yet.

The injured were taken to South Shurma Upazila Health Complex, and Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical Hospital.

The OC said the bus, carrying around 30 Ijtema devotees, was travelling to Sunamganj from the Biswa Ijtema venue at Gazipur’s Tongi. The bus collided with the truck as it neared the Shatmile area on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in the morning and left three people dead on the spot, while another died on his way to hospital

Primarily it has been believed that the accident took place due to heavy fog, said the OC.
