Bogra: Shumi Khatun, who lost her left arm after getting thrown off her mother’s arms as she was hit by truck, is still not out of danger.  Dr. Nirmolendu Chowdhury, deputy director of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where she is under treatment, told UNB Shumi is ‘not yet out of danger.’

Doctors will be unable to say anything till ‘72 hours pass’ from the time of the accident, since infections can appear within the space of 24 hours, Dr Nirmolendu added.

The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon, as a stone-laden truck hit Shumi’s mother while she was crossing the road carrying her daughter in her arms, said M Osmani Goni, sub-inspector of Sherpur Police Station. The accident took place near the Sherua Bottola in Sherpur.

The blow caused Shumi to be thrown off as the mother lost her grip on the child. Shumi’s left arm got severed from the elbow down, SI Goni said.

Shumi, 7, is a student of class one girl of a local Brac School and daughter of Dulal Khan of Kanaigathi in the upazila. Besides the severed arm, she also sustained a serious head injury, and broke her right hand.

The girl was senseless while admitting to the hospital but now shehas regained her senses, doctors informed. The operation would start after the certain time.

Locals first took her to Sherpur Upazila Health Complex from where she was shifted to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, the SI said, adding that they seized the truck but its driver managed to flee.
