At least nine people were killed and four others injured by lightning strikes in Sunamganj, Netrakona, Kishoreganj and Habiganj districts on Tuesday.

In Sunamganj, five people were killed and four others injured as they were struck by lightning separately.

Nur Hossain, 35, a farmer and son of Mokther Hossain of Bhati Tahirpur village in Tahirpur upazila, died when a thunderbolt bore down on him while cutting paddy in his field at Shanir Haor around 1 pm, said Nandan Kanti Dhar, officer-in-charge of Tahirpur Police Station.

Shahara Banu, 55, wife of late Hazrat Ali, was killed after being hit by a thunderbolt at a haor as she went there to fetch cattle home at Purangaon village of Bishwambharpur upazila in the morning.

In another incident, Surma Begum, 22, daughter of Abdur Rahman of Siddhirpur village in Bishwambharpur upazila, was killed and Lili Begum, 6, daughter of Fazr Ali, injured in the lightning strike.

Ferdous, 12, son of Asad Ali of Kathakali village in Doarabazar upazila, died when a thunderbolt hit him while catching fish at a river around 1:30 pm, said Sushil Chandra Das, officer-in-charge of Doarabazar Police Station

Meanwhile, three people were injured in another incident of lightning at Hatamar village in Fenarbak union of Jamalganj upazila in the morning.

In Habiganj, Zobair Miah, 32, a resident of Muradpur village in Baniachang upazila, was killed after being hit by lightning while cutting paddy at a haor in the morning.

In another incident, Sujon, 27, a worker and son of Kanai Moda hailing from Chunarughat upazila, was killed when a thunderbolt struck him while working in a paddy field in Nabiganj uapzila around 11:30 am.

In Netrakona, Islam Uddin, 65, a farmer of Gazipur district, was killed as a thunderbolt struck him while working in a paddy filed in Khaliajuri upazila at noon.

In Kishoreganj, Fahim Hossain, 12, son of Shahadat Hossain of Majlishpur village in Bajitpur upazila, died in a lightning strike while plucking litchi around 2 pm.
