Car driver escapes traffic by reversing down highway

During a traffic jam Tuesday in Ohio, one driver had a pretty unusual (and very dangerous and illegal) solution to get out of the backup.

His solution? To back up. Literally.

The Ohio Department of Transportation captured this footage of a vehicle manoeuvring out of an early morning traffic jam and then reversing down the highway. When the driver made it to an intersection, rather than pulling to the side of the road, the driver just kept on going in reverse with cars facing the correct direction all around, through multiple stoplights before finally making it into a grocery store parking lot. And traffic cameras caught the whole thing, reports ksl.com.

Fortunately, no one was injured during this stunt, according to ODOT, and a department spokesperson told NBC4 in Columbus that the vehicle may have had transmission problems. But it goes without saying that you should never, ever try this yourself. ODOT uploaded the video with the message, ‘Please, don’t be that driver,’ and explained that if you’re ever having vehicle problems, you should pull over and call for help.

While the video might seem funny, it’s still pretty miraculous that no one was hurt, and I think I speak for all Utah drivers when I say we do not need a situation like this going viral in our state. Our reputations have suffered enough. Stay safe, don’t drive recklessly and pull over if you need help.’
