In yet another instance of extreme inhumanity and torture of senior citizens in India’s Odisha, a 75-year-old woman was dragged on the road and assaulted by her daughter-in-law at Talapali village under Gaisilat block in Bargarh district on Thursday.

The incident came to the fore after video of the incident went viral on social media, sources said, reports odishatv.in.

The incident has sparked a public outcry with social activist Namrata Chaddha demanding strict against the accused woman.

‘An attempt to murder case should be lodged against the woman. Besides, husband of the accused woman should also be arrested for supporting the act of his wife,’ said Chaddha.

Getting information, police registered a case and arrested the accused woman identified as Balamati Sahu yesterday. She was produced before court, said Additional SP Jasobanta Senapati on Friday.

According to reports, Balamati dragged her mother-in-law Padmabati Sahu on the road and thrashed her mercilessly over land dispute at around 8 am yesterday.

‘Basing on the complaint filed in connection with the incident, we registered a case and subsequently arrested Balamati. Our investigation in connection with the incident is on,’ Senapati added.

A 60-year-old woman was pushed off terrace by her son over property dispute at Chintamaneswar area under Laxmisagar police limits in Bhubaneswar on June 3.
