Avijit murder: Farabi again remanded on 5-day policy custody
Dhaka: A Dhaka court on Saturday granted police five more days to question Shafiur Rahman Farabi, a suspect in the murder of writer-blogger Avijit Roy, in police custody in a case filed under the Information and Communication Technology Act.
Metropolitan Magistrate M Mostafizur Rahman passed the order when Detective Branch Inspector Mohammad Fazlur Rahman, also the investigation officer of the case, placed Farabi before the court on completion of his 10-day custody in the murder case and sought another 10 days’ police custody in the ICT case.
Mohammad Wahiduzzaman, Ramna police sub-inspector, filed the case against Farabi on Saturday morning.
Earlier on 3 March, a Dhaka court sent him to police custody for 10 days to be interrogated in the Avijit murder case.
Rapid Action Battalion arrested Farabi in Jatrabari in Dhaka on 2 March.
Later, he was handed over to the DB and shown arrested in the case filed by Avijit’s father, Ajoy Roy, with Shahbagh Police Station.
Farabi issued death threats to Avijit on social network Facebook on several occasions.
Earlier in 2013, Farabi was arrested in a case filed for issuing death threats to the Imam who conducted the namaz-e-janaza for slain blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider.
However, Farabi got temporary bail from the High Court in the case.
Avijit Roy, son of former Dhaka University physics professor Ajoy Roy and founder of blog Mukta-Mona, was killed and his wife Rafida Afrin Banya injured as at least two attackers stabbed them near TSC on the Dhaka University campus on 26 February night.
