Manjur quits, collects nomination paper

Chittagong: Chittagong city mayor M Manjur Alam, also Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed candidate in the upcoming the CCC elections, on Friday resigned from the post and collected the nomination paper the next mayoral contest.
Manjur Alam submitted his resignation letter to CCC panel mayor and councilor Md Hossain at the CCC Building at 3:25pm and collected his nomination paper as a mayor candidate for the next CCC polls from the district Election Commission (EC) office at about 4:00pm, said Nurul Islam, member secretary of Chattagram Unnayan Andolon.
Manjur will contest the mayoral election, slated for 28 April, as a candidate of citizen’s platform Chattagram Unnayan Andolon.
Earlier on Thursday, the city unit BNP extended its support to Chattagram Unnayan Andolan platform’s mayoral candidate M Manjur Alam Manju in the upcoming Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) polls.
BNP Chittagong city unit president Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury made the announcement after a meeting of party senior leaders at his Mehdibagh residence in the port city.

Jazfrul Islam Chowdhury, the city north unit ex-president SM Fazlul Haq, the city vice presidents Shamsul Alam, Abu Sufian and mayoral candidate and incumbent mayor Manjur Alam were, among others, present.
On Wednesday, Chattagram Unnayan Andolan, a platform of pro-BNP professionals and intellectuals, declared current Manjur as a mayoral candidate for the upcoming CCC elections.
Meanwhile, ruling Awami League endorsed AGM Nasir Uddin as a mayoral candidate for the CCC.
