Chittagong: Two major candidates— Bangladesh Nationalist Party-blessed M Manjur Alam Manju and Awami League-backed AGM Nasir Uddin— submitted their nomination papers on Sunday to contest the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) polls slated for 28 April.

Nasir together with city Awami League president ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, its treasurer Adus Salam and senior party leader Ishaq Mia, submitted the nomination paper to returning officer Abdul Baten at the regional Election Office at about 12:00pm.

Nasir will contest the polls as a candidate of Nagorik Committee platform.

Talking to reporters, Nasir said, ‘Resolving water logging problem in the city will be my prime task.’

As his attention was drawn to BNP’s allegation of violation of the election code of conduct, the ruling party-backed mayoral contender said this is nothing but a negative campaign to confuse voters.

A total of 18 mayoral hopefuls bought nomination papers to join the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) elections. Today is the last date for the submission of nomination papers as per the election schedule.

Earlier in the day, BNP-blessed and Chattagram Unnayan Andolan platform's mayoral candidate M Manjur Alam Manju submitted his nomination paper to contest the polls.

Manjur along with senior BNP leaders, including party vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman and city unit BNP president Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, submitted the nomination paper to returning officer Abdul Baten at the regional Election Office at about 9:00am.

Talking to reporters, Abdullah Al Noman, who has been working as chief of Manjur's election steering committee, said, ‘We've formally started election related activities with the submission of the nomination paper.’

He hoped that people will reelect Manjur with a big margin in recognition of his works for development of the city and making it free from terrorism and water logging.

Earlier on Friday, M Manjur Alam resigned from his CCC Mayoral position and collected the nomination paper to vie for the next mayoral contest.

The city unit BNP on Thursday extended its support to Chattagram Unnayan Andolan platform's mayoral candidate M Manjur Alam Manju in the upcoming Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) polls, although the party high command is yet to make its position clear about joining the elections.

On Wednesday, Chattagram Unnayan Andolan, a platform of pro-BNP professionals and intellectuals, declared current Manjur as a mayoral candidate for the upcoming CCC elections.

A three-time Awami League-backed former ward councillor, Manjur had been elected CCC mayor with BNP's support in the 2010 polls defeating his once political mentor and Awami League leader ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury with a big margin.

Later, he was made a member of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's advisory council.
