Gulshan attack: Families identify 5 militants
Dhaka: Family members have confirmed the identities of the five militants who were killed in a commando operation in the Holey Artisan Bakery after a hostage crisis.
The commando operation at the café ended within 12 minutes on Friday morning, killing six attackers, rescuing 13 hostages, arresting one suspect alive and recovering the bodies of 20 hostages.
Police published the names of five of the six attackers as Akash, Bikash, Don, Badhan and Ripon while the identity of the rest could not be confirmed.
However, family members confirmed the real names of the attackers. They are Meer Samih Mobassher, Rohan Ibn Imtiaz, Nirbras Islam, Khairul Islam Payel and Shafiqul Islam Uzzal, said police.
Two police officials -- Assistant Commissioner of Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Robiul Islam and officer-in-charge of Banani Police station Salauddin Ahmed Khan -- were killed in the attack of the militants when police tried to enter the Holey Artisan Bakery on Friday night. Around 50 members of law enforcement agencies were injured in the attack.
Earlier on Friday evening, seven gunmen entered the Holey Artisan Bakery in the capital’s Gulshan area and took hostage around 40 people, including restaurant staff and guests, both locals and foreigners.
Two suspects, including one of the seven gunmen, are now in police custody.
