Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is hopeful about fair polls in Comilla City Corporation on Thursday as the party has found the Election Commission (EC) serious about maintaining law and order during the voting.

“In Comilla, the CEC said a new journey of democracy will begin from there. We want to trust him. Talking to him, we’ve got an impression that the EC is serious about maintaining law and order…fair election is possible if it acts properly,” said BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan.

He came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after a meeting with CEC KM Nurul Huda at the EC Secretariat on Wednesday.

A three-member BNP delegation, led by Nazrul, met the CEC in the afternoon ahead of the Comilla city polls.

During the meeting, the BNP leader said the CEC informed them about the election preparations.

He said they informed the CEC that the ruling party men, under the guidance of an influential minister, are making a blueprint to rig votes. “The CEC has assured us of taking all necessary measures to prevent it.”

Mentioning that their party’s demand is to hold the election neutrally, Nazrul said, “We’ve told the CEC to live up to the commitment he made in Comilla during his visit.”

He said the CEC also gave them assurance that they will take steps so that the agents of all parties can go to the polling stations without any obstacle.

Nazrul said KM Nurul Huda also told them that law enforcers will not only ensure the presence of candidates’ agents but also will take stern action if any one tries to engage in such activities.
