Black Day being observed at DU
Teachers and students of Dhaka University observed August 23 as ‘Black Day’ in memory of the attack on the teachers, students and officials of DU by the military forces on August 20-23, 2007, during the caretaker government rule.
DU students and teachers wore black badges and a discussion program was held at the TSC auditorium with DU Vice- chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique in the chair on Wednesday, reports the UNB.
Addressing the discussion the VC said, ‘Conspirators are trying conspiracy against the country everywhere. We should be concerned against their conspiracy’.
‘The traitors always chose August for succeed their motive. They killed Bangabandhu and his family in 15August 1975, attacked On Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 21 August, 2004 and tortured teachers and students of Dhaka University on 20-23 August 2007,’ he said.
Demading exemplary punishment of those involved in these incidents he said, if the guilty people are put on trial, nobody will dare to cause such incidents in the future.
Among others DU pro vice chancellor (education) Prof Nasreen Ahmed, Dr Akhtaruzzaman (administration), Dhaka University Teachers’ Association DUTA president Dr ASM Maksud kamal, Prof Anwar Hossain and Prof Sadrul Amin were present there.
In August 2007, a violent clash between some DU students and members of Bangladesh Army took place centering a football match at University central play ground, where the military members severely beat up the students. Following the clash, the army arrested four teachers and eight students of the university.
The attack sparked huge protest by the students against the army across the country.
Since then, the university observes the Black Day every year on August 23.
