JU terminates two teachers
Jahangirnagar University: Jahangirnagar University authorities have relieved its two teachers of their job on separate charges.
Assistant professor Mufti Mahmud of the Institute of Information and Technology (IIT) was terminated for being absent in his workplace for the last three years while lecturer of the institute Ruhul Amin Khandaker was sacked as he was awarded a three-year jail term in a case filed for making derogatory comments about the Prime Minister, reports UNB.
The decision was taken at a syndicate meeting of the university held on Monday night, said JU Registrar Abu Bakar Siddique.
University sources said Ruhul Amin had made a post on his Facebook wall on 13 August 2011, saying, ‘Drivers are getting driving licences without any tests. All die, why not prime minister Sheikh Hasina?’
On 2 October 2011, Monwar Hossain, assistant police super of Dhaka, filed a case against the JU lecturer with Dhaka’s Chief Judicial Magistrate Court under section 124 (a) of the Penal Code.
On 12 August 2015, a Dhaka court sentenced the JU teacher to three years’ imprisonment in the case.
However, the JU teacher has been staying in Australia since 2009.
Meanwhile, assistant professor Mufti Mahmud had gone abroad on leave. However, he did not join work even in three years after the expiry of his leave.
