Students of 50 pry schools attend classes under open sky in Jessore
Benapole: Students of over 50 primary schools in Monirampur upazila of Jessore district are attending their classes under the open sky due to awful condition of the buildings of the institutions.
Upazila Education Officer Abdul Jabbar Sardar said there are 262 primary government primary schools in the upazila, of which, over 50 school buildings, including Nebugati Monirampur Adarsha, Atpakia-Begumpur, Kopalia, Durbadanga primary schools, have turned dilapidated.
Visiting some of the risky school buildings the correspondent found that a teacher of Shahpur Government Primary School was taking his 4th grade Bangla class on the school field.
Headmistress of the school Meherunnessa lamented that although the pass rate of her institution is 100%, they can’t take classes indoors due to risk of roof collapse.
She complained plasters often fell from the ceiling which compel them to take classes in open space.
‘Students are dropping out as their guardians remain worried about their children’s wellbeing after sending them to school. We’ve urged the authorities concerned to construct new building but no initiative is taken yet,’ she said.
Azizur Rahman, a guardian, said that he always remains anxious after sending her daughter to such a school, fearing a ceiling collapse.
Sakibul Hasan, a 5th grade student of the same school, voiced similar fears about studying in classrooms, adding that sometimes his teachers take them out to the fields to take their classes.
President of the school Abul Hossain said an application has been sent to the authorities for constructing a new building, but to no avail.
The Upazila Education Officer said a list of 24 such risky institutions has been sent to the higher authorities with hope of immediate action.
