15 SIU students expelled over BCL leader murder
Sylhet: Sylhet International University authorities have expelled 15 of its students for their link to the killing of Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Qazi Habib.
The decision was taken at a Syndicate meeting held on Friday night, UNB reported quoting sources at Public Relations office of the university.
The students who were rusticated include SIU unit BCL president M Sagar Hosain, M Alaur Khan (Imran), Elias Ahmad Punam, Anisur Rahman (Anis), Moynul Islam (Mainul), M Ashik Uddin (Ashik), M Abdul Awal (Sohan), Bashir Ahmad Tuhin, Sujon Miah, Harun Rashid (Harun), Qazi Kamrul Ahmed, Nayan Roy, Saidur Rahman (Saimon), Bishwajit Dey (Bapon), and M Saidur Rahman Sumon.
Habib, a 4th year student of the university and also an activist of the city unit of BCL, was hacked to death allegedly by some activists of the organisation he belonged to in the city on 20 January.
Director of the SIU public relations office Tarek Uddin said a five-member committee was formed after the killing of Habib.
The 15 students were expelled as per the report of the probe body, he said.
Sources at the city unit BCL said Habib was a supporter of Tushar, general secretary of the unit.
A few days back, he left the group and joined Telihawar group, another faction of the unit.
On 20 January, some BCL activists swooped on Habib on the campus and hacked him indiscriminately.
He was whisked off to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Mount Adora Hospital in the city where he succumbed to his injuries.
