Dhaka University Day today
Dhaka: Dhaka University (DU) will observe its 95th founding anniversary on 1 July with a daylong colourful programme.
Vice-Chancellor of the university AAMS Arefin Siddique will inaugurate the programme at about 10:00am at Mall Chattar on the campus.
Later, teachers and students of the university will take part in a rally which will start from Mall Chattar and terminate at Teacher-Student Centre (TSC).
A discussion meeting will be held at about 11:00am at the TSC auditorium where cultural personality Ramendra Majumder will present the keynote paper, titled ‘Higher Education for Preventing Terrorism, Militancy and Developing Human Consciousness’.
VC Arefin Siddique will preside over the discussion while pro-vice chancellor (Edu) Dr Nasreen Ahmad and pro-vice chancellor (Admin) Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman will be present as guests of honour.
Different halls, departments and offices of the university will arrange different programmes marking the day. Hall authorities will provide iftar and special meals on that day.
Arts Faculty building, Curzon Hall, TSC building and other important infrastructures of the university will be decorated with colourful lights.
Rare manuscripts will be shown at university central library from 10:00am to 1:00pm on that day.
Department of Biomedical Physics & Technology will showcase their new inventions at Curzon Hall at 10:30am.
The day will be observed to mark the launching of academic activities by the university on 1 July, 1921.
Starting off with just 877 students in three faculties and 12 departments in 1921, the university has grown to accommodate over 31,955 students and 1955 teachers in 81 departments and 11 institutes at present.
The DU has played a vital role in Bangladesh history. Its students and teachers sacrificed their lives in the 1952 Language Movement, Mass Upsurge in 1969 and during the War of Liberation in 1971.
Even the national flag of Bangladesh was first hoisted at Bot Tola on the Dhaka University campus on 2 March, 1971.
