DUJA issues ultimatum to punish SI Mehedi
Dhaka: Dhaka University Journalists Association (DUJA) on Monday issued an ultimatum to punish Ramna police sub-inspector Mehedi Hasan Sumon by 24-hour for his alleged connection with torturing New Age DU correspondent Nazmul Huda Sumon and Khairuzzaman Shuvo, a student of Management Studies Department of DU.
The organisation issued the ultimatum at a human-chain at Aparajeyo Bangla of the university.
DUJA president Masum Billah said Nazmul and Shuvo were tortured by policemen as he took snap of two police personnel while they were riding on a motorbike violating the law in city's Bijoynagar on Sunday.
"Police personnel brutally beaten up them with guns and their boots," he added.
He strongly condemned the torture and demanded exemplary punishment of those who were involved with the incident.
Nazmul said that he was heading towards campus riding his bike, with his friend behind, at about 5:00pm on Sunday.
The on-duty police stopped Nazmul and asked him to drop the passenger, he said.
He showed his identity card and asked them to allow him to go.
Sub-inspector Mehedi, who was also on a motorbike with a passenger behind, then snatched his identity card.
Nazmul tried to take a picture of the policeman himself travelling with a passenger, angering SI Mehedi, Nazmul said ‘They beat up us on the road, later took us to the police station and again beat us up.’
‘In police custody, some 10 to 15 others beat us up with rifle butts and boots,’ he said, adding, ‘they also beat us while transporting us on the police van.’
