Home Economics College students confine Nahid to Banbeis building

Dhaka: Home Economics College students confined Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid to Bangladesh Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics (Banbeis) building demanding that their college to be declared as an institute under Dhaka University (DU).
As the minister went to Banbeis to attend a programme, the students took position in front of the building to confine him at about 6:00pm, reports news agency United News of Bangladesh.
Later, a delegation of the students entered the Banbeis building to talk to the Education Minister, said Priyanka, a student of the college.
Earlier in the day, they blocked Nilkhet intersection, one of the busiest roads in the city, to meet their demand.
Hundreds of students of the college took position on the road at about 10:30am, creating huge traffic gridlock at Ajimpur, Mirpur road and adjacent areas.
The female students also placed a demand for introducing co-education in the college.
However, the students withdrew their blocked around 5:25pm, nearly seven hours after they started it.
They also threatened to continue their strike on Wednesday if their demand is not be met by Tuesday night, said Israt Jahan, a student of the college.
Established in 1961, the college admits only female students to its five departments— Food and Nutrition, Resource Management and Entrepreneurship, Child Development and Social Relationship, Art and Creative Studies and Clothing and Textile.
