DU set to hold Mourning Day programmes
Dhaka: The premier Dhaka University has taken up extensive plans to hold programmes marking the observance of the National Mourning Day hoisting black flags and staging rallies in memory of its most famous former student and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Father of the Nation on 15 August.
According to a university press release, black flags will dominate the skyline of the campus while the national standard will be kept half-mast to mourn Bangabandhu’s August 15, 1975 assassination along with most of his family members.
It said the as part of the day’s programme, a discussion on Bangabandhu’s life and works would be held at the Teachers and Students Centre (TSC) at 10 am with Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique in the chair.
“It (discussion) will be followed by the screening of a documentary titled ‘Aradhya Bangabandhu’,” the press release said.
It said the vice chancellor would lead a silent procession to be joined by senate and syndicate members, deans, provosts, wardens, proctors, departmental chairmen, directors of different institutes, teachers and employees and officials of the university.
The marchers would rally in front of the vice chancellor’s house early in the morning and then would go to Bangabandhu Museum to offer wreaths.
“Special prayers will be offered after Zohr prayer at the university’s central mosque and mosques at its dormitories and places of worships of other faiths,” the release said.
It said a children art competition would be held at TSC cafeteria from 10am to 11.30am to mark the day coinciding with the 40th death anniversary of the country’s founding father based on a theme—Bangabandhu and Bangladesh.
Students of University Laboratory School and College, Udayan High School and College, Nilkhet High School and the children from the university families and its residential areas can participate in the competition.
