RU students block road over 6-point demand
Rajshahi: Students of Rajshahi University (RU) blocked Dhaka-Rajshahi highway in front of their university on Friday to press home their six-point demand, including providing compensation for their fellow Mehedi Hasan Emon who was killed in a road crash in Sirajganj.
The other demands include giving exemplary punishment to culprits involved in the accident following proper investigation, turning all important highways into four-lane ones, banning plying of unfit vehicles on the highways and enforcing speed limit on the highways.
Witnesses said a group of 300 students formed a human chain blocking the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway in front of the main gate of the university at about 11:00am.
They staged demonstrations there for half an hour, disrupting vehicular movement on the highway.
The students withdrew the blockade at about 11:30am after RU Proctor Professor Tariqul Hasan assured them of meeting their demands.
Mehedi Hasan Emon, son of Abdus Samad of Nazimkhan union under Rajarhat upazila in Kurigram district and a 2nd year student of RU Biochemistry Department, suffered injuries in a collision between a bus and truck on Hatikumrul-Bonpara highway at Khalkula in Tarash upazila of Sirajganj on Tuesday.
Emon was rushed to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at about 2:30pm on Wednesday.
The mishap also left four people dead on the spot and over 49 injured.
