Los Angeles: Do not expect to hear any naughty words on Apple’s newly launched Beats1 radio station: The 24-hour live radio programme, which the company launched yesterday (30 June) as part of its new Apple Music service, only plays clean versions of explicit songs.

Explicit songs are available through the on-demand subscription section of Apple’s new music service, but the song titles themselves have been sanitised as well: The service lists the explicit version of NWA’s hip-hop classic as F**k Tha Police, and a Pearl Jam song titled I Got S**t.

That is notably different from competitors like Spotify and Rdio, which seem to have no issues with spelling out explicit song titles. However, it is consistent with the way Apple has been naming songs on iTunes, where explicit titles have long been neutered in the same way. Both iTunes and Apple Music still surface explicit titles when searching for naughty words, and explicit artist names are not neutered either.

Apple’s decision to only play clean versions of songs on Beats1 was first noticed by Buzzfeed. An Apple spokesperson confirmed that policy to Buzzfeed, but declined to comment further. Apple did not respond in time to a request for comment for this story.
